Microsoft has recently announced that it will add its new Microsoft 365 Copilot assistant to OneNote. This AI-powered assistant is already being used in apps such as Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Now, OneNote users will also benefit from this intelligent assistant to help them with note-taking.

As your notetaking partner, Copilot uses your prompts to draft plans, generate ideas, create lists, organize information, and more. Greg Mace, a product manager for OneNote, explains how the AI assistant works in OneNote.

How Microsoft 365 Copilot Assistant Works in OneNote

Much like Copilot’s integration in Word, the AI assistant can rewrite, format, or summarize existing text in OneNote based on prompts in a sidebar interface. You can also ask the AI assistant to create a plan for an event or generate topics and talking points for meetings.

The Copilot assistant will be integrated inline in OneNote, just like in Word. In Word, you can highlight paragraphs and the Copilot assistant will appear when you mouse over a section of the paragraph to offer up rewritten text automatically. However, Microsoft has not shown off Copilot’s inline integration in OneNote yet.

Preview Version of Copilot in Word and Outlook

Microsoft is currently testing a preview version of Copilot in Word and Outlook with a small number of Microsoft 365 enterprise customers. Some of these early versions can be enabled in beta copies of Word right now.

According to Microsoft, the company is testing Copilot heavily before rolling it out more broadly. So, it’s not clear when Copilot will be available in OneNote for the public. The company has not committed to any specific dates for Copilot’s release in OneNote.

My Experience with Copilot in Word

As a language model, I had the opportunity to play around with the private preview of Copilot in Word recently. I used it to generate text and found it to be a very early implementation right now. There is a lot of missing functionality that needs to be sorted before it’s ready for public preview.

However, the AI assistant still has a lot of potential to make note-taking easier and faster for users. With its ability to generate ideas and create plans, Copilot can help you stay organized and productive.

Benefits of Using Copilot in OneNote

Here are some of the potential benefits of using Copilot in OneNote:

Improved productivity:

Copilot can help you generate ideas, create plans, and organize information quickly and efficiently.

Time-saving:

With Copilot, you can save time rewriting or summarizing existing text. The AI assistant can do it for you.

Better collaboration: Copilot can help you generate talking points and ideas for meetings, making collaboration easier.

More accurate notes:

With Copilot’s ability to summarize information, you can be sure that you have captured all the important points.

Reduced stress:

Copilot can take some of the stress out of note-taking, making it easier for you to focus on the task at hand.

Conclusion

Microsoft’s new AI Copilot assistant has the potential to revolutionize the way we take notes. By using AI to help us generate ideas, create plans, and organize information, Copilot can make note-taking faster and more efficient. While it’s not yet available in OneNote, we can look forward to its release and the benefits it will bring. Stay tuned for more updates on Copilot’s integration with OneNote!
